Commission on Social Determinants of Health - International Symposium on Indigenous Health - Australia 2007

Date: 29, 30 April, 2007
Venue: Adelaide, Australia

This international symposium was hosted by the CRCAH as one of the main activities of the Social determinants of Health Program for 2007. It was convened by our partner organisation Flinders University and led by Professor Fran Baum as one of the twenty Commissioners on the World Health Organisation-endorsed Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH). A series of case studies on the social determinants of health from around the world were used as the basis for the meeting, including five Australian case studies.

About 70 key researchers, policy makers and industry met to discuss and inform the preparation of a report and key recommendations for policy and action on the social determinants of Indigenous health that was presented to the CSDH at their 8th meeting on 7-9 June 2007 in Vancouver . This report will be of value to governments who wish to understand what actions on the social determinants of Indigenous health would mitigate risk conditions and improve health outcomes for Indigenous people.

The five Australian case studies presented at the symposium were:

  1. Social determinants of health from a social justice perspective – Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission.
  2. Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative and their home ownership program.
  3. Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service prison health progam.
  4. Central Australian Aboriginal Congress (CAAC).
  5. Water costs as a social determinant of health in a remote community.

The program, background overview document, case studies, final report and photographs from the symposium are available at:
