I started my traineeship back in June 2002 as a Laboratory
Assistant with the Department of Environmental Health at Flinders
Medical Centre. I had no prior experience at all in the sciences
but the job sounded very interesting and I figured what I
didn’t know I would learn on the job anyway. This is what
eventuated, as I simultaneously learned on the job and completed a
Tafe Certificate III in Laboratory Skills. I completed my
traineeship after 18 months and was enjoying my work when the
opportunity came up for me to undertake the Bachelor of
Environmental Health at Flinders University. I wasn’t quite
sure if this was for me; however, I figured if I’d come this
far, why not take the next challenge and see what happens. I always
had my laboratory skills to fall back on if it didn’t work
out. Well, as it has turned out, here I am now in my third year and
still enjoying the journey. Yes, it has been very challenging but I
can almost see the vision of what I can become now that I am on the
home run to the completion of the degree. The CRC has been very
supportive of me during my studies and the varying work placements
along the way, of which I am very appreciative—it has given
me an insight to the variety of work available through this degree.
I would recommend it to anyone who likes to work outdoors and with
people and wants to help improve their lives.
