Lisa Whop is a Medical Science student at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Lisa’s curiosity about the endless areas of learning involved in Science began in her senior years at Kirwan State High School in Townsville where she completed her High School certificate. She chose to study at QUT in the hope that she would one day be able to contribute to the often overlooked area of medical research.

Lisa is a cadet in the National Indigenous Cadetship Program (NICP) where she is awarded a stipend from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) during her study. Lisa is also required to participate in 8-12 week stint of work experience and to her amazement The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) agreed to Lisa’s placement. The CRC for Aboriginal Health supported Lisa financially while she completed her work experience.

Lisa is currently on a short break from her study and has taken an appointment as a Scientific Technical Officer at QMIR. Lisa says her cadetship has given her the confidence to work in the laboratory as well as a practical understanding of theoretical concepts.
