During her tertiary studies Penny worked as a Research Assistant
to Associate Professor Christos Pantelis at the Mental Health
Research Institute. Upon completion of her Bachelor of Education
(Secondary) and Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) degrees at
Deakin University in 2000, she began work for the National Stroke
Foundation and the National Stroke Research Institution as a
research assistant. It was through these two organisations that
Associate Professor Rae Walker employed her as a research
assistant, and in 2001 she moved across to La Trobe University full
time. For five years, under Rae Walker, she worked in research in
Partnerships in the Health Field, Risk Communication, Trust
Evaluation, and taught both at an undergraduate and postgraduate
level. During this time she completed an Applied Science Diploma at
Swinburne University in Health Statistics. In early 2006 she left
her position with Rae and began working as a Research Officer for
Professor Vivian Lin. In this role she currently works as the
secretariat to the Australian Network of Academic Public Health
Institutions and as the La Trobe University Link person for the CRC
for Aboriginal Health. She also teaches undergraduate students in
epidemiology, health statistics and sociology. Penny’s plan
for the future is to undertake a masters and perhaps a PhD in
Indigenous health.
